St Anne Square in the 1950s

This is St Anne’s Square as it appeared in the summer of 1956. The shop in front was called ALLWARES, which later became DIESEL and nowadays AMORINO GELATO. In the corner, there was a barber shop, and below it, a small restaurant.

The small restaurant,  Army and Navy, was known for selling six pennies’ worth of chips—one of the very first takeaway chips served in a bag. Later, there was a fish and chips shop near Bisazza Street, which is now closed and has been replaced by Cape Cod. The original owner has since passed away.
